Yes... Just look at that stick figure's poor broken spine!
Let’s face it… we’ve all got a lot of work to do. Luckily, this fast paced world is full of many options that grant us a variety of locations to pack all of that work in. We’ve got our offices and our homes of course, and even our coffee shops and co-work spaces. While any of these may be our most favorite work location, studies have shown that the most productive and physically healthy option may be alternating between them over the course of a work day. This is all for the simple fact, that if you're sitting down for hours at a time, you're doing your body more and more harm.
The human body is a mechanism that requires movement throughout its waking hours to maximize its potential. More than that, many experts have declared sitting the new smoking. Essentially, being on our bottoms all day creates a health lowering effect that one large burst of exercise just isn’t able to undo. This was bad news for those of us parked on our butts all day, and it's about much more than weak muscles. Sitting all day also causes the following problems:
- Poor Digestion
- Organ Damage
- Poor Posture
- Worse Blood Flow
...and of course you still end up with weaker, less responsive muscles that actually atrophy faster than even a stringent athlete (who sits for 6 or more hours straight every day) can rebuild.
As a result, the best option to fix the sitting problem at home and at work and to maintain your body without changing careers is to get a standing desk. Whether you choose an adjustable standing desk or a fixed stand up desk, simply shifting your work space in this way offers greater mobility, heightened focus, and a stronger more responsive body. We can all be productive in a better way with a standing desk.
